The three-row vehicle segment has started 2026 on a strong note. Family cars continue to dominate Indian roads, and January numbers clearly show that buyers still prefer practical, spacious seven-seaters. From affordable MPVs to rugged SUVs, the competition remains intense. What stands out this month is the strong performance of established models like the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Mahindra Bolero, while some premium options witnessed slight dips. Let us break down the numbers and understand what is really happening in the market.

1. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga – Still the Undisputed Leader

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga once again secured the top position with 17,892 units sold in January 2026. Compared to 14,248 units in January 2025, this marks a solid 26 per cent growth.
In my view, the Ertiga’s success is no surprise. It offers the right mix of mileage, space, comfort, and affordability. It appeals to private buyers as well as fleet operators. Maruti’s wide service network also gives customers confidence. If there is one thing Ertiga could improve, it would be the interior premium feel, but overall it remains the safest bet in the 7-seater category.
2. Mahindra Scorpio – Holding Strong

Mahindra Scorpio finished second with 15,542 units, almost similar to last year’s 15,442 units. The growth is just 1 per cent, but maintaining such high numbers is impressive.
Scorpio’s rugged image and strong road presence keep it relevant. With a mid-cycle update expected soon, sales could rise further. Personally, I feel Scorpio attracts buyers who want a bold SUV feel rather than a typical family MPV. The only challenge is pricing, as it now sits in a higher bracket compared to some competitors.
3. Mahindra Bolero – Big Growth Story

The Mahindra Bolero recorded 11,841 units, a massive 36 per cent jump from 8,682 units last year.
This growth clearly shows that rural and semi-urban markets are still strong for Mahindra. Bolero is simple, durable, and trusted for tough usage. It may not offer modern features, but reliability and low maintenance are its biggest strengths. In my opinion, a mild feature update could make it even more attractive without losing its core identity.
4. Mahindra XUV 7XO – New Player, Strong Start

The recently introduced Mahindra XUV 7XO entered the list with 10,133 units. For a new product, this is a very healthy start.
Buyers seem to appreciate its modern design and updated features. As it gains more visibility, I believe its numbers may increase further. However, Mahindra will need to maintain consistent supply and quality to sustain this momentum.
5. Toyota Innova – Slight Dip but Still Reliable

Toyota Innova, including both Crysta and Hycross, sold 9,455 units, slightly lower than 9,780 units last year. That is a 3 per cent decline.
Even with the small dip, Innova remains one of the most trusted family cars in India. Its comfort and long-term durability are unmatched. The higher pricing may be limiting its growth, but those who buy an Innova rarely complain about ownership experience.
6. Kia Carens – Steady Performer

Kia Carens secured sixth place with 5,633 units, showing a small 2 per cent growth over last year.
Carens offers a good balance between SUV styling and MPV practicality. It feels modern and feature-loaded. Personally, I think Kia needs to strengthen its brand trust further in rural areas to grow sales more aggressively.
7. Maruti Suzuki XL6 – Facing Pressure

Maruti Suzuki XL6 reported 3,820 units, down 13 per cent from 4,403 units last year.
The XL6 is more premium than the Ertiga, but buyers seem to prefer the value proposition of the Ertiga instead. The price difference may be pushing customers away. A refreshed design or added features could help revive its momentum.
8. Toyota Fortuner – Premium but Stable

Toyota Fortuner sold 3,046 units, slightly down from 3,149 units last year.
In the premium SUV segment, Fortuner continues to enjoy strong brand loyalty. Its pricing is high, but buyers who want status and durability still choose it confidently. The small decline does not indicate weakness but rather limited market size at this price point.
9. Renault Triber – Surprise Growth

Renault Triber showed one of the biggest improvements with 2,509 units, a huge 72 per cent jump from 1,456 units.
This growth proves that there is still demand for affordable seven-seaters under budget pricing. Triber may not be powerful, but its flexibility and price make it attractive for middle-class families. If Renault improves engine performance slightly, it could climb even higher.
10. Tata Safari – Strong Comeback

Tata Safari rounded off the top ten with 2,375 units, up 53 per cent from 1,548 units last year.
The recent introduction of the petrol version seems to be working in its favour. Safari offers strong design and safety appeal. In my opinion, Tata’s focus on safety ratings is slowly building more trust among buyers.
Overall Market Observation
January 2026 clearly shows that Indian buyers continue to prioritise space and practicality. Maruti dominates with Ertiga, while Mahindra holds strong with Scorpio and Bolero. Toyota maintains its loyal customer base despite minor dips.
What I personally observe is that affordability and brand trust still matter more than flashy features in this segment. However, new launches like the XUV 7XO show that modern design and updated tech are equally important for future growth.
The 7-seater segment remains highly competitive, and with more facelifts and new launches expected this year, the ranking could shift in the coming months.
