Mercedes-Benz India has officially brought back one of its most stylish and aspirational sedans, the CLA, after a gap of nearly six years. The second-generation CLA has now been unveiled in India, but this time there is a major transformation. Unlike its previous petrol and diesel versions discontinued in 2020, the new CLA arrives exclusively as a fully electric vehicle.

The new Mercedes CLA 250+ AMG Line marks the brand’s entry into a more futuristic premium EV space, combining coupe styling with next-generation electric technology. Bookings for the model are scheduled to begin in March 2026, with deliveries expected later this year.

Electric-Only Comeback with a Premium Positioning

Mercedes-Benz is introducing the new CLA EV as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) import. Interestingly, the company claims pricing will feel close to locally assembled CKD models, which could make the vehicle more accessible than typical imported luxury EVs.

Only one variant will be offered initially, the CLA 250+ AMG Line, positioning it as a premium lifestyle-focused electric sedan rather than a multi-variant lineup. Personally, this strategy suggests Mercedes wants to test demand before expanding configurations in India.

Modern Coupe Design with Improved Aerodynamics

The new CLA continues its signature four-door coupe silhouette but adopts Mercedes’ latest EV design philosophy. The sedan features an aerodynamically optimized shape with a drag coefficient of just 0.21 Cd, improving efficiency and driving range.

Exterior highlights include:

  • Sloping coupe-style roofline
  • Frameless windows
  • Flush door handles
  • Connected LED DRLs
  • Adaptive LED headlamps with illuminated star elements
  • Large illuminated Mercedes three-pointed star grille
  • AMG Line bumpers and 18-inch AMG alloy wheels

A distinctive illuminated grille featuring 142 small star elements adds strong visual presence, especially at night. In my opinion, Mercedes has successfully retained the CLA’s sporty identity while modernizing it for the electric era.

Premium Interiors with MB.OS Technology

Inside the cabin, the CLA 250+ AMG Line receives a thoroughly redesigned interior focused on technology and sustainability. Mercedes has used recycled materials along with premium soft-touch surfaces to enhance luxury appeal.

Key interior highlights include:

  • Sporty AMG seats with heating and electric adjustment
  • Extendable thigh support
  • AMG steering wheel
  • Illuminated dashboard star pattern
  • Floating center console
  • Turbine-style AC vents
  • Burmester premium sound system

The dashboard is dominated by a 14-inch infotainment display powered by Nvidia-based MB.OS, paired with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.

Personally, the integration of MB.OS could be one of the biggest upgrades, as Mercedes is moving toward a software-driven luxury experience rather than just hardware upgrades.

Practical Storage and Comfort Features

Despite its sporty coupe design, Mercedes has ensured everyday usability. The CLA EV offers a 400-liter rear boot along with an additional 100-liter front storage space (frunk) under the bonnet.

A heat-protective fixed glass roof has also been included, designed to reduce cabin heat in warmer climates like India. However, real-world effectiveness in peak summers will be something buyers will closely observe.

New MMA Platform and 800V Architecture

The biggest technological highlight of the new CLA EV is Mercedes’ MMA (Mercedes Modular Architecture) platform combined with an advanced 800V electrical system.

The vehicle is powered by an 85.5 kWh battery pack, delivering a claimed driving range of up to 792 km on a single charge.

Performance figures include:

  • 268 bhp electric motor
  • Rear-wheel drive layout
  • 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds

From an industry standpoint, the 800V architecture allows faster charging capabilities and improved efficiency. However, its real advantage in India will depend heavily on the expansion of compatible fast-charging infrastructure.

What This Launch Means for Mercedes-Benz India

The return of the CLA in electric form signals Mercedes-Benz’s long-term commitment to electrification in India. Instead of adapting existing petrol models, the company is introducing vehicles built specifically as EVs from the ground up.

Personally, the CLA EV could attract younger luxury buyers who want performance, design, and sustainability in a single package. Pricing and waiting periods will ultimately determine how successful this imported EV becomes.
