N. Chandrasekaran to Step Down as Tata Sons Chairman; Tata Group Stocks Slide

Mumbai, Aug 12, 2026 — Natarajan Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, has announced he will not seek reappointment when his current five-year term ends on February 20, 2027, marking a major leadership shift at one of India’s largest conglomerates after nearly a decade at the helm.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Chandrasekaran said his decision followed the absence of unanimous support within the Tata Sons Board for extending his term. He said Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust — which together hold a 66% stake in Tata Sons — had backed a further term for him, but one board member declined to support the proposal when it was tabled in February 2026. The move comes amid reported friction between the 63-year-old chairman and the Tata Trusts.

Not an Immediate Resignation

Chandrasekaran is not stepping down with immediate effect. He will remain in the role until his tenure formally ends in February 2027.

No Successor Named Yet

Neither Chandrasekaran nor the Tata Group has named a successor. In his statement, Chandrasekaran said he has asked the board to move quickly on succession planning to ensure a smooth transition. The announcement comes just days ahead of Tata Sons’ annual general meeting, scheduled for August 18.

Markets React

News of the decision hit Tata Group stocks. Shares across the conglomerate fell, with Tata Consultancy Services — India’s largest IT services firm — and Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle business among those affected; TCS shares alone dropped nearly 6%.

A Nearly Decade-Long Tenure

Chandrasekaran took over as Tata Sons chairman in February 2017, following the dramatic ouster of Cyrus Mistry in 2016. He was notable as the first chairman with no family ties to the Tatas, and only the third to lead the group without the Tata surname. He was reappointed for a fresh five-year term in 2022, set to expire in 2027. Chandrasekaran joined Tata Consultancy Services as a software programmer in 1987 and has now spent nearly 40 years with the Tata Group.
