NEW DELHI: The ministry of exterior affairs on Sunday mentioned India had voted in favour of a United Nations Basic Meeting decision selling using equal-area world map projections. It additionally made it clear that the measure doesn’t endorse any specific map and that India’s sovereign territory should be depicted in accordance with its official map.The MEA mentioned the decision neither adopts nor authenticates any specific world map and doesn’t deal with political cartography, together with worldwide boundaries, disputed territories or place names.India however used its rationalization of vote to reiterate its place on Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.“India’s sovereign territory, together with the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, should be depicted in accordance with India’s official map. Any inaccurate or deceptive depiction is unacceptable. Our place on India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity is obvious, constant and non-negotiable.”

The UN Basic Meeting adopted the decision, titled “Right the Map: Rebalancing World Cartographic Illustration and Selling Equitable Illustration of the World’s Areas, Notably Africa”, on September 4 by a vote of 164 to at least one.The decision encourages using equal-area projections that protect the relative sizes of continental landmasses. Nevertheless, India clarified that it shouldn’t be interpreted as endorsing any particular map, projection or depiction of nationwide boundaries.“We consider that the decision needs to be understood as supporting the broader use and consideration of equal-area map projections and never as endorsing the Equal Earth projection or another particular map projection,” Indian diplomat Raghoo Puri mentioned whereas explaining India’s vote.
